Lady Gaga, beau Luc Carl go bowling and get into engagement argument at BowlMor

Lady Gaga has her boyfriend by the (bowling) balls.

Stefani Germanotta isn't an easy girl to pin down, as on-again love Luc Carl learned the hard way when they got into an argument about engagement rumors during a date Wednesday night at BowlMor Lanes Times Square.

The pair arrived about 8:30 for dinner at the alley's Uptown Bar and Lounge - but as Gaga dug into a healthy meal of salmon, green beans and undressed salad, a spy says things got tense.

The pop star began talking about a recent interview in which she had to shoot down engagement rumors. Carl insisted that she should have said they were indeed engaged.

But if that's true, Gaga's got a good "Poker Face." She retorted that, in fact, they were not engaged, and so of course she shouldn't have said otherwise. She even enlisted the bartender to her cause, asking for his opinion and trying to get him to take her side.

So is Carl trying to get his Lady friend to settle down — or does he just like messing with the media even more than she does? Perhaps more important, if Gaga got engaged, what would her ring be made of? We've got our money on petrified bird poop. Or perhaps human teeth.

Still, the couple managed to put aside the "Bad Romance" in favor of bowling. A group of six or so friends joined them as they finished dinner. At one point, Gaga asked to borrow the waitress' iPod earbuds so she could play her new single, "Born This Way."

When she and her pals hit the lanes, Gaga traded the pinot noir she'd been sipping for shots of Jack Daniels. BowlMor shut down its second floor to accommodate the group, who stayed until about 11.

Gaga topped off the evening by signing a bowling pin "Monster Balls," in honor of her latest tour.

Snowbound bowling with the boyfriend sounds like a pretty low-key night for the risqué chanteuse. But this is the same frequently pants-less superstar who, as Gatecrasher reported, spent the holidays with Carl's family in Nebraska.

Perhaps it was there that the couple first kindled their love of the lanes: The entire clan spent several hours at metropolitan Omaha's Papio Bowl, which had closed to the public for privacy.

But Little Monsters needn't worry that their diva's been totally tamed. She wore green leopard-print shorts and elbowlength black leather gloves at BowlMor — a look we'd call "Gaga casual."
